Fantasia Morocco is a performance that is inspired from historical wartime attacks of the Berber, and the desert knights. Today, Fantasia is considered as a cultural art form and a form of martial art. Each region in Morocco has one or more fantasia groups called Serba, totalling thousands of horse riders nationwide.
On the Indonesian island of Sumba, Indonesia, the Pasola War Festival marks the start of the new planting season, and only begins on the arrival of multi-coloured sea worms, which only appear once a year for a couple of days. The quantity and colour of the worms is supposed to indicate the quality of the coming years harvest. It is an ancient fertility ritual in theory, but in practice it is a violent blood sport. Tribes from different villages, mount their ponies and carry long, sharpened wooden spears, the neighbouring tribes square off in mock war.
Festival of Tradition has been running since 1939, it’s the oldest gaucho celebration in Argentina. Every year it takes place on the weekend closest to the 10th of November, a historical date that corresponds to the birthday of the author and Argentine poet José Hernandez.
Luminarias Festival is a visually exciting tradition held in the small village of San Bartolome de Pinares, Northern Spain, horses are ridden through fires the night before the day that celebrates San Anton, the patron saint of animals. It is believed that by riding through smoke and fire, the animals will be purifies and protected for the coming year.
Rapa Das Bestas is a festival that dates back to the early 18th century. Wild ponies are rounded up on foot from mountains around Galicia. They are then caught by hand, vaccinated, wormed and micro-chipped. Sabucedo is the village where this tradition is most authentic. Historically the round up was to collect mane and tail hair from the ponies, which was made into brushes, mats and stuffed mattresses. A few of the ponies were kept for consumption or farm work.
